Checking the geometry of the tenoning machine – production quality

Checking the geometry of the tenoning machine – production quality

Recently, we had the opportunity to perform one of the most precise and demanding diagnostic services – checking the geometry of a panel-sizing and tenoning machine. This project once again demonstrated the importance of maintaining correct machine settings for quality production and preventing potential complaints.

Machine assembly precision and product quality?

When it comes to industrial machinery, especially those used to process materials like wood or plastics, every millimeter counts. Even the slightest deviations in machine assembly or adjustment can lead to noticeable defects in the final product. Geometric irregularities can result in inaccurate dimensions, uneven edges, or component fit issues, among other things – which in the long run translates into complaints, material losses, and a decline in customer confidence.

What is a panel sizing machine?

What is a sizing machine? Sizing machines are technologically advanced machines used for simultaneous sizing (i.e., dimensioning) and tenoning (shaping the ends of wooden or plastic elements). They are indispensable in furniture production, window and door joinery, and many other woodworking industries. Due to the complexity of their operation, their precise adjustment is absolutely crucial – both for efficiency and quality.

Why is correct machine setup so important?

Every tenoning machine consists of many components that work together with high precision: guides, spindles, tables, cutters, and a support frame. Improper adjustment of any of these components impacts the entire machining process. This can lead to:

  • non-uniform dimensions of products,
  • wzrostu odpadów produkcyjnych,
  • increase in production waste,
  • increase in production waste,
  • huge costs of complaints from end customers.

That is why it is so important to regularly carry out precise geometric measurements, which allow for the detection and elimination of irregularities, especially before the first launch of production machines.

How did the measurements go?

While completing a project for one of our clients, we measured the machine frame geometry and analyzed the trajectory of the workpiece as it passed through the machine. We used professional measuring tools (special adapters for measuring guides) and laser methods (laser tracker), which allowed for accuracy of hundredths of a millimeter.

The measurements consisted:

  • checking the frame alignment with the horizontal and the flatness of the mounting points,
  • checking the straightness and parallelism of the guides with respect to each other,
  • checking the trajectory of the workpiece.

The above tests allowed us to obtain data for analysis – thanks to this, we could compare how the machine geometry translates into the actual material movement path, and therefore – into the final product quality.

Summary

The most important result of the service performed was not only confirmation of problems with the machine’s geometry, but above all – providing strong technical data that allowed the customer to apply for a repair under the manufacturer’s warranty.

Thanks to our service, the client:

  • uzyskał precyzyjny raport potwierdzający nieprawidłowości,
  • obtained a precise report confirming the irregularities,
  • avoided further quality losses,
  • improved the stability of the production process in the long term.

Maintaining correct geometry in machining machines is not just a technical issue – it is the basis for production quality and long-term savings.
