Measuring and setting the position of conveyor belt rollers

Belt conveyors are an integral part of many production, storage and logistics processes. Their reliability is crucial to the continuous operation of the entire process line. In one of our recent projects, we had the opportunity to deal with measuring the position of rollers, which are responsible for the correct running of the conveyor belt.

Where did the problem arise?

The customer reported that the transmission belt was not moving evenly on the rollers, resulting in it sliding sideways and consequently causing the machine to stop. On the surface, the task seemed simple – just check the position of the rollers, make adjustments and you’re done. However, in practice there were many more challenges.

Measurement challenges

  • Limited access to the rollers – a special measuring adapter had to be made.

  • Unconventional alignment of the deviceLaser Tracker had to be mounted in an unconventional way to inspect all points.

  • The scale of the task – nearly 500 rolls to be checked, with the farthest points at the limit of the device’s measurement range.

  • Time pressure – conveyor access limited to just a few hours of downtime.

Under such conditions, there was no room for error – any inaccuracy could mean prolonging the process or failing the measurement altogether.

How was the implementation?

Thanks to the use of Laser Tracker and a carefully prepared measurement methodology, we were able to collect all the necessary data. We then performed a thorough analysis of them and prepared a clear report that indicated the locations of irregularities and recommended corrections to the roll alignment.

Effect for the customer

The report provided allowed the client to clearly identify:

  • Where there are problems with the alignment of the rollers,

  • What actions need to be taken to restore full functionality of the device.

Thanks to precise measurements and quick response, long-term downtime and associated financial losses were avoided.
