Turbine unit geometry measurements during retrofit

Turbine unit geometry measurements during retrofit

During repair and modernization work, situations very often arise in which the actual condition of the equipment deviates from the technical documentation. At such moments, 3D measurements play a key role, allowing engineers to make decisions based on actual dimensions and geometric relationships.

In one of our recent projects, we had the opportunity to support modernization work carried out at an Austrian hydroelectric power plant, where our task was to measure the geometry of the turbine generator.

Purpose of measurement

During the upgrade, we performed comprehensive measurements of the hydro turbine unit to:

  • to know the actual geometry of the key components of the hydrosystem,

  • Determine the dimensional relationships between mounting surfaces,

  • preparation of data that could be used in further design stages.

The information gathered was used by designers to design modifications to increase the efficiency of the entire power plant unit.

Technology that supports modernization

The use of precise 3D measurements makes it possible to quickly and accurately represent the actual state of the structure. This allows not only to detect discrepancies between documentation and reality, but also:

  • Evaluate wear and deformation of structures,

  • Plan the necessary modifications,

  • minimize the risk of errors during installation and subsequent repair work.

Effect for the customer

Once the measurements were completed, the client received a detailed report with full geometric documentation of the turbine unit. As a result:

  • gained reliable project data,

  • could optimize the modernization plan,

  • and design new components in such a way that they are fully compatible with the existing design.

Applications

The use of 3D measurements in retrofitting processes helps combine engineering with practice – giving designers confidence that their solutions are based on real data, not just documentation from years ago.

Accurate measurements are the foundation of successful modernization.
At TREON, we support renovation and modernization processes by providing precise geometric data to make accurate design and technical decisions.
