Dimensional control of the machine frame structure

Dimensional control of the machine frame structure

Dimensional inspection of welded structures such as machine frames is a key step in the mechanical engineering process that ensures the structure meets design requirements.

The following are the basic steps that are usually taken during the acceptance and dimensional inspection of machine-bearing structural components.

1. preparation of documentation:

  • Technical drawings: Make sure you have the latest and approved technical drawings that show all dimensions and tolerances
  • Technical specifications: check the material and installation specifications to ensure that the construction is in accordance with the requirements.

2. geometric and dimensional measurements:

  • Checking leveling: For large structures, it is necessary to level the structure, that is, to make sure that the entire structure is correctly aligned to the gravity vector (level) before measurements.
  • Length and angle dimensions: Use appropriate measuring tools to check that all components have the correct dimensions according to the drawings.
  • Shape tolerances: Check all characteristics such as flatness, straightness, roundness, cylindricity or surface profile or line profile.
  • Directional tolerances: Make sure all parts that need to be to each other: perpendicular, parallel or inclined are made correctly.
  • Position tolerances: Measure all position characteristics: hole position, concentricity, concentricity, symmetry.
  • Runout tolerances: if there are rotating components in the machine it is possible that there are also circumferential and overall runout tolerances should be checked.
  • Evaluation of compliance with tolerances: Verify that the dimensions are within the permissible tolerances provided by the design or standards (e.g., EN standards for steel structures).

3 Measurement documentation:

  • Measurement protocols: Make accurate documentation of all measurements, taking into account any deviations from nominal values (assumed by the designer).
  • Final Report: Prepare a report summarizing the results of the inspection, which may be required for construction acceptance.

4 Corrections and repairs:

  • Dimensional correction: If deviations are found, take appropriate steps for correction, such as straightening, improving welds, replacing parts surfacing and re-machining.
  • Re-check: After making adjustments, perform a re-check to ensure that all dimensions are as required.

5 Final Acceptance:

  • Overall review: After completing all measurements and adjustments, conduct a final inspection to ensure that the design is transport or further manufacturing processes.
